Panchgani inferred its name from Panch which signifies five rises of Sahyadri, and Gani which implies settlement. The magnificence of Panchgani is similar to a miracle in itself. The entire Panchgani is encompassed by rises and green trees. The five towns around Panchgani are Dandeghar, Khingar, Godwali, Amral and Taighat. The Krishna River streams close-by which made the pool of Dhom dam. The east of the Pachgani is Wai, Bavdhan and Nagewadi dam, at west there is Gureghar, at south is Khingar and Rajpuri, and on north is Dhom Dam. Panchgani was established by Lord John Chesson in the year 1860, and later was proclaimed as the rise sanatorium by Sir Bartle Freere for the Europeans in the year 1863. In 1910 Panchgani Hill Station Municipal Council was built.
