Weekend Journey to Munnar from Bangalore

There are multiple routes you can take to drive from Bangalore to Munnar and each of these roads have their own pros and cons. Certain routes will be lengthy but the roads will be better while some shorter routes will have stretches of potholed and dirt roads. Regardless of the road you take, the last leg of the journey will involve ghat roads, steep climbs and plenty of hair pins. Of the several routes from Bangalore to Munnar,  the route through Kangeyam-Udumalaipetai is generally regarded as a good one as it is a good balance between journey length and road condition.


The Route : Bangalore – Hosur – Salem – Perundurai – Dharapuram – Udumalaipettai- Marayoor – Munnar.

Silk Road to Salem (195 km) :- This is an excellent highway and you will cross Hosur on the way. The trip should take around 3 hrs and there are 3-4 toll gates in the way. There are several good vegetarian restaurants on either side of the highway near Salem.

Salem to Perundurai (80 km) :- Ride the NH47 towards Coimbatore, once you have driven around 75 km from Salem, watch for the signboard which signals the the road to Perundurai. Once you take the road leading to Perundurai, you will exit NH47 and enter SH-96 

Perundurai to Kangeyam. (33km) :- This is around 33 km of good roads with minimal traffic. You will pass a tiny town called Chennimalai on the way to Kangeyam.

Kangeyam to Dharapuram (33 km) :- This is again a good stretch and will take around 45 mts to cover.

Dharapuram to Udumalaipettai (40km) :- A single road with no divider and minimal traffic. Keep looking out for signboards that give the directions to Munnar.

Udumalaipettai to Marayoor. (48km) :- The ghat section begins around 20 mts from Udumalaipettai town and there are no shops or towns for the next 45 km. Before you start this stretch, check your car and make sure you have enough fuel to last the next 45 km. There are few check points, and at each point you will be required to furnish the driver and car details. Finally, you will arrive at the picturesque town of Marayoor.

Marayoor to Munnar (42 km) :- From Marayoor, you will drive through sandalwood forests with several wild life. The a mix of good and bad stretches will take you to Lakkam water falls. From here on drive very carefully, the narrow mountain roads have little or no shoulders, coupled with your weariness, it can be disastrous. After driving for 15 – 20 mts you will reach the Eravikulam National Park, and finally the entry to Munnar town.
