Weekend Trips from Mumbai
Mumbaikars have innumerable options when it comes to weekend
getaways. From popular destinations like Mahabaleshwar, Alibaug and Lonavala to
offbeat but equally beautiful offbeat places. Here are the top weekend getaways
near Mumbai where you can relax, rejuvenate and recharge your senses after a
hectic week.
Jawahar :- A small hill station that is home to
several tribes and dotted with beautiful attractions. Head to Jai Vilas Palace
that belonged to erstwhile tribal kings of the region. Visitors can also take a
tour of the palace to look at the antiques and paintings. Other attractions in Jawahar include Hanuman
Point and the rustic huts adorned with famous Warli art.
Bordi :- Famed for the stunning 17 km beach stretch
and fragrant chiku orchards, Bordi is a highly recommended weekend getaway from
Mumbai. Apart from the beach, the town has a tranquil lake formed by the
Asavali and Depchari dams which makes for a great picnic spot. The local market
in Bordi is a great place to pick up chiku chips, pickles and powder. The best
time to visit Bordi is from June to September.
Malshej Ghat :- A stunning ghat enveloped by lush
green hills, majestic waterfalls and thick clouds. Try to plan your visit
during the monsoons to enjoy the place in all its glory. Malshej Ghat is home
to several species of flowers, animals and birds and visitors can also trek the
Harishchandragad peak. You can also spot several migratory flamingos during the
trip and if you couldn't, then head to nearby Pimpalgaon Joga Dam and you can
see them flocking in the backwaters.
Bandardhara :- Located around 180 km from Mumbai,
Bandardhara is best visited during the monsoons. The Bandardhara Lake and the
Randha Waterfall are the top attractions here, apart from which visitors can
indulge in angling, trekking and walking on the lake shore. Accommodation
options include a MTDC guesthouse and Anandvan Resort.
Matheran :- The best part about this quaint hill
station is total lack of pollution due to the absence of motored vehicles.
Matheran offers the usual mix of hill station activities and sightseeing
options. Don't miss the mini train ride leading up to Matheran.
Dapoli :- A picturesque town in the Konkan region
that is referred to as the 'Mahabaleshwar of Konkan'. Dapoli lies in proximity
to several smaller villages like Anjarle, Karde, Harnai and Murud. The
sightseeing options in Dapoli include Suvarnadurga Fort and Ladghar beach. You
can also indulge in dolphin watching in this fishing village.
Lonar :- More than 50,000 years ago, a massive
meteorite weighing more than 20 lakh tons crashed here to create the Lonar
crater. Today, it serves as a destination for a unique trekking experience.
While the locals make sliding down the crater look easy, be careful if you are
a novice trekker. Also, avoid the man-made steps that have been etched on the
side as they tend to crumble easily. Once you trekked the crater, visit the
Ganapati Gaimukh, Renukadevi and Daitasudana temples.
